Robert Hughlett, Ed.D.
Former Mayor and Councilmember, City of Cerritos

Former Mayor and Councilmember Robert Hughlett, Ed.D. was elected to the Cerritos City Council in 1997 and was re-elected in 2001. He served his first term as Mayor in 2000 and his second term in 2004.

An educator at Cerritos College for the past 31 years, Hughlett has served as Director of Disabled Student Programs and Services since 1980.

Hughlett served on the City Council's Business and Industry and Performing Arts Committees and was the chairperson of the Budget/Finance Committee. He was the Council's delegate to the Gateway Cities Council of Governments, League of California Cities/City Selection/Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Orange Line Development Authority, Sanitation Districts 2, 3, 18 and 19/Waste Management, and Southeast Water Coalition. He served as the alternate delegate to the California Contract Cities Association.

Prior to his election to the City Council, Hughlett spent eight years on the ABC Unified School District Board of Education, serving as president, vice president and clerk of the Board. During his tenure on the Board, he served as liaison to the cities of Cerritos, Norwalk, Hawaiian Gardens, Lakewood and Artesia, as well as representative to the California Association of Large Suburban School Districts and the Los Angeles County School Trustee Association. Hughlett also served as president of the Southeast Regional Occupation Board of Education, and as a founding member of the Education Subcommittee of the Friends of Arts Education at the Cerritos Center.

A 27-year member and former president of the Cerritos Optimist Club, Hughlett is also a member of the Friends of the Cerritos Library, the Friends of Arts Education at the Cerritos Center and the Cerritos Chamber of Commerce. He has served as chairman of the Los Cerritos Chapter of the American Heart Association and has served on the board for Su Casa Family Crisis and Support Center. He was appointed by Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe to the Personal Assistance Services Council, which oversees development of in-home supportive services for disabled residents.

Hughlett has also coached 14 youth sports teams and served as co-leader of Cub Scout Pack 394.

Hughlett has earned a number of honors for his community involvement, including an American Heart Association Legacy of Leadership Award from the Los Cerritos Chapter, Cerritos Optimist Club Man of the Year Award, a PTA Lifetime Achievement Award from Gahr High School, a Volunteer Appreciation Award from the City of Cerritos, the 1991 Volunteer of the Year Award from the Cerritos College Foundation, and three Certificates of Recognition for fundraising from the Los Cerritos YMCA. He has also received the Association of California Community College Administration Leadership Award for Administrative Excellence.

Hughlett holds a bachelor's degree in English from Saint Mary's College, a master's degree in education from California State University, Los Angeles, and a doctoral degree in post-secondary administration from Nova University.

He and his wife, Marianne, have two children and two gorgeous grandchildren.

The Hughlett family has lived in Cerritos for 31 years.
